Have you ever started a weight loss journey feeling all fired up and ready to go, and then somewhere along the way, the sparkle wore off?

[00:00:00] Have you ever started a weight loss journey feeling all fired up and ready to go, and then somewhere along the way, the sparkle wears off?

[00:00:10] The meals start feeling a little repetitive, exercise becomes a bit of a chore, and the scale isn’t giving you the applause you were hoping for, and suddenly, your weight release journey feels like one big case of blah.

[00:00:25] And that, my friend, is often when old habits start quietly knocking at the door.

[00:00:32] In this week’s episode of the Thin Thinking podcast, we are taking a look under the lid of weight loss boredom, because there may be a lot more going on under there than you think.

[00:00:45] We’ll explore why boredom shows up, how your inner rebel can sneak into the picture, and some simple ways to bring curiosity, challenge, and even a little fun back into the process.

[00:00:58] So come on in.

[00:01:05] Did you know that our struggle with weight doesn’t start with the food on your plate or get fixed in the gym?

[00:01:12] 80% of our weight struggle is mental. That’s right.

[00:01:17] The key to unlocking long-term weight release and management begins in your mind.

[00:01:23] Hi there. I’m Rita Black.

[00:01:25] I’m a clinical hypnotherapist, weight loss expert, best-selling author, and the creator of the Shift Weight Mastery Process.

[00:01:33] And not only have I helped thousands of people over the past 20 years achieve long-term weight mastery, I am also a former weight struggler, carb addict, and binge eater.

[00:01:45] And after two decades of failed diets and fad weight loss programs, I lost 40 pounds with the help of hypnosis.

[00:01:53] Not only did I release all that weight, I have kept it off for 25 years.

[00:01:59] Enter the Thin Thinking Podcast where you, too, will learn how to remove the mental roadblocks that keep you struggling.

[00:02:06] I’ll give you the thin thinking tools, skills, and insights to help you develop the mindset you need, not only to achieve your ideal weight, but to stay there long term and live your best life.

[00:02:20] Sound good? Let’s get started.

[00:02:23] Hello. Hello. Hello.

[00:02:25] My friends, come in and put a little pep in your step, get cozy, maybe even mix things up and sit somewhere you normally don’t sit, because this week we’re talking about breaking out of boredom.

[00:02:40] Now, we have just kicked off another live shift weight mastery process, and for those of you who are shifting along with me, I am so happy to be on this journey with you.

[00:02:51] And if you’re not, no problem at all.

[00:02:53] I’m sending you lots of love wherever you are on your own journey.

[00:02:57] And the reason I mention this, though, is because when we’re in the middle of a live shift, I am busy pouring lots and lots of love into our participants.

[00:03:07] So this week, I’m reaching back into the Thin Thinking vault and bringing you an oldie but a goodie, an episode I recorded a couple of years ago all about boredom and weight management.

[00:03:21] And funnily enough, I went looking for this particular episode because of something that happened to me in my garden.

[00:03:28] So here we are at the end of September, right, and heading into October, and I have been thinking about planting my winter garden.

[00:03:37] My dahlias are very droopy and brown, sadly, along with a lot of other things.

[00:03:46] It’s been a hot one.

[00:03:48] And I love gardening, I love planting things and we are lucky enough in Southern California that we can plant things in the winter and watch them grow, and see all the amazing fruits of our efforts.

[00:04:00] But this year I caught myself thinking, “Eh, winter gardening is kind of boring.”

[00:04:08] Boring.

[00:04:09] I almost decided not to do one at all. Yikes.

[00:04:14] So when I took a closer look, I realized winter gardening itself wasn’t boring, but there was something going on underneath that feeling.

[00:04:23] Winter gardening is a little more challenging for me, admittedly.

[00:04:27] Here in Southern California, it’s a little of a tough nut to crack, and I’m not so quite confident with it.

[00:04:36] And instead of my brain saying, “Hmm, Rita, maybe this is an opportunity to stretch yourself and to challenge yourself,” it simply slapped the label boring on the whole idea of winter gardening and suggested we move right along.

[00:04:53] And I thought, “Oh, right, I know this one,” because we can do the very same thing with weight loss and weight management.

[00:05:03] After maintaining my own weight release for 31 years and struggling with my weight for 20 plus more years than that before, I absolutely understand that there can be times when your weight mastery journey starts to feel a little blah, meh, boring.

[00:05:21] But sometimes I’m bored is worth getting curious about, and that is exactly what we’re gonna explore in today’s episode, what may really be underneath those weight loss blahs and how to get your mojo back.

[00:05:37] And speaking of mojo and putting a pep in your step, as we step into October, the season of pumpkin spice everything.

[00:05:48] I have a little special for you.

[00:05:51] It’s a limited time offer.

[00:05:53] My not live, but my self-study Shift Weight Mastery hypnosis-based 30-day process, and I’m also including five Shift Express hypnosis downloads as a special bonus.

[00:06:06] Now, the wonderful thing about the self-study is that you can begin whenever it works for you.

[00:06:11] So it’s not in the specific timeline like the live shift.

[00:06:14] You can move through the process on your own schedule and return to it as many times as you would like during your year of access.

[00:06:23] So if you are interested in just learning more, you can head over to www.shiftweightmastery.com/october to check it out and see everything that’s included, and add your own pumpkin spice if desired.

[00:06:40] All right, friends, let’s dust off this oldie but goodie and dive into ways to get your mojo back if you’re bored with your weight release.

[00:06:50] So I work with a lot of people, and I see a lot of journeys to weight mastery, and let’s face it, one of the fastest, fastest roads to falling off your weight release journey is getting bored.

[00:07:04] Am I right?

[00:07:06] So I wanted to dive into this and dig into the dirt of weight loss boredom today.

[00:07:11] And will you dig with me, friends?

[00:07:15] Can I say enough puns for you today?

[00:07:19] So let’s start with where we are usually not bored, which is at the beginning of a diet or a plan of some sort.

[00:07:28] This is the glamorous and sexy part of weight loss, right?

[00:07:33] So first of all, it’s new and exciting.

[00:07:37] We’ve got this new plan.

[00:07:39] We’ve got a lot of steam under our belt.

[00:07:43] We’re gonna lose some weight.

[00:07:45] We’ve got the different things, the specific foods we’re gonna eat, and the way it’s gonna change our life.

[00:07:53] And our dopamine and reward brain is engaged, right?

[00:07:57] So we’ve got a little bit of high.

[00:07:58] It’s kind of like a new relationship, right?

[00:08:00] We’re kind of in love with the idea of the diet and love with ourselves being in the diet.

[00:08:08] And there’s a structure, therefore, a lack of chaos.

[00:08:13] And we love that because we spend a lot of our time struggling with our weight in a lot of chaos, inner chaos, external chaos.

[00:08:22] So the fact that we are in a structure and we know our place in the structure, man, that feels so good.

[00:08:30] And the focus, we know what we’re gonna do and not do.

[00:08:33] This makes us feel safe.

[00:08:37] And there’s a willingness. Why?

[00:08:40] Because we’re in so much pain.

[00:08:42] It’s so painful to be in that chaos, and to feel out of control, and to be gaining weight, so we’re so willing.

[00:08:51] We’re so willing at this point.

[00:08:53] And we start off, and it’s all amazing.

[00:08:56] We’re compliant, we feel great, we get on the scale every morning, or maybe we do, and we’re losing weight, or our clothes are fitting our- us better.

[00:09:09] But somewhere along the way, things begin to change.

[00:09:14] The honeymoon is over.

[00:09:17] We’ve now been eating this thing a week, two weeks, a month, and it’s…

[00:09:23] There’s a little sameness to that food, and there’s not so much dopamine floating around in our brain anymore.

[00:09:33] We have the structure down, so guess what?

[00:09:37] That structure begins to feel like it’s hemming us in, and it kind of feels monotonous.

[00:09:47] And guess what? We’re getting on that scale, and we’re releasing that weight a little more slowly.

[00:09:54] Way less fun.

[00:09:56] The dopamine hit on the scale has been replaced by frustration and anxiety.

[00:10:05] I’m not doing this right.

[00:10:07] Why did I not lose weight yesterday? Why did I gain weight?

[00:10:12] This diet isn’t working. My body’s broken.

[00:10:16] We start to have limiting beliefs.

[00:10:17] Those limiting beliefs that had gotten pushed to the back of our mind are starting to find their way back to the front of our mind.

[00:10:27] We feel a bit restless. We’re stuck in a feeling of sameness.

[00:10:31] It’s presenting as this one big snooze fest.

[00:10:37] And this is where we might find ourselves slipping, getting off track, reaching for things that aren’t on plan.

[00:10:43] Well, you know, I’ve been so good.

[00:10:47] I could just have that one thing tonight. Ooh.

[00:10:51] Well, okay, since I had that one thing, I might as well have this other thing, and then, hmm, well, I’ll have that thing, too, and then tomorrow I’ll just get back right on that diet, and I’ll be good.

[00:11:02] Oh, maybe not. It’s the weekend.

[00:11:07] We’ll get really back on it on Monday. I promise we are gonna be so good on Monday.

[00:11:11] You just, you watch me, I’m gonna just do, like, this diet like it’s never been done.

[00:11:18] Does that sound familiar?

[00:11:21] So if you’re feeling bored, here’s some advice.

[00:11:25] Here’s a way to look at it, and I’m gonna go out on a limb here ’cause I…

[00:11:30] This is a little radical, you guys.

[00:11:33] But I’m gonna shake this up a bit now, and I’m gonna put it out there to you that you are not really bored.

[00:11:39] When this is happening, you’re not really bored, but your brain is telling you a boring story about what you’re doing and who you are being.

[00:11:49] Your relationship to your weight mastery journey has gotten boring, and it needs a reframe.

[00:11:56] So I would like to look at what you may consider boring through some new eyes and offer you some thin thinking.

[00:12:04] So first of all, we get that sensation, the honeymoon is over, it’s not as fun as it used to be, and I get it.

[00:12:12] You know, the fun wears off on a lot of things that we’re committed to, right?

[00:12:17] I mean, I think about things like marriage.

[00:12:25] Those of you who are married less than seven years, maybe you won’t laugh as hard as those of us who’ve been married for many, many years.

[00:12:32] This year was 33 for me.

[00:12:33] You know, and i’m married to the man of my dreams, my soulmate.

[00:12:36] I love him dearly.

[00:12:37] But sometimes marriage can be monotonous and boring.

[00:12:40] And again, I go back to it’s not really boring, but it’s the story we tell ourselves.

[00:12:45] So other things like even children can be boring.

[00:12:49] Love my children, but being a parent sometimes can be monotonous and boring.

[00:12:54] But I’m still committed to my children.

[00:12:56] I’m still committed to my husband.

[00:12:57] Having good dental hygiene, brushing your teeth, it’s not the most exciting thing in the world, right?

[00:13:02] But I do it every day, couple times a day, three times a day sometimes, and I stand there and I hum or I think about other things.

[00:13:12] But not the most scintillating thing in the world, but I do it because I’m committed to my teeth.

[00:13:18] And even having a clean house.

[00:13:21] Sometimes people are really excited about cleaning the house.

[00:13:23] I’m not one of those people, but I do it because my life works better when my house is clean.

[00:13:30] So some things are not always exciting, but our commitment to them is.

[00:13:37] You know, my commitment to my children, my commitment to my marriage really thrills me, even though the actual…

[00:13:45] my commitment to my weight mastery has never been boring.

[00:13:49] It’s always been exciting because I’m committed to being free, I’m committed to that person I am when I’m taking awesome care of myself.

[00:14:00] That’s never boring. That’s never boring.

[00:14:03] So I want you to start to look at your weight mastery, and this idea that it’s boring, and think about your commitment to yourself, and think about the fact that you are really on a hero’s journey.

[00:14:16] Because sometimes I think the way we see ourselves becomes boring, right?

[00:14:20] “Oh, I’m on this diet, I’m just struggling.”

[00:14:22] Because we really put our struggle with our weight in this place of shame in our brain, and yeah, that can get boring, you know, being ashamed of ourselves, ashamed that we’re, like, this struggler and we’re struggling away, and we don’t like to see ourselves this way.

[00:14:39] So when we go on a diet, in the beginning days, we start to see ourselves in a different way, maybe hold ourselves with a little more pride.

[00:14:47] But when things start to get a little same, that feeling of shame starts to come back, or we start to feel less good about ourselves.

[00:14:57] But I wanna remind you, your commitment to your weight mastery journey, you’re a hero.

[00:15:03] Heroes have obstacles always thrown at them, even boredom.

[00:15:09] And overcoming boredom is an obstacle that expands you and makes you more of you.

[00:15:16] And I think when we get bored, I think we go to our place of shame, our place of, like, “Why do I even have to lose weight in the first place? I’m a loser because I have to lose weight. W- other people are luckier than me.”

[00:15:31] We can go to a very negative, limiting place instead of remembering who you are, and I want you to remember who you are.

[00:15:39] You’re a hero on a powerful journey, and every obstacle you overcome, even boredom, you are doing… You are expanding yourself.

[00:15:49] You are becoming more of who you are.

[00:15:51] It’s a journey of self-realization. There’s… Yes, weight loss is included, but this is really about your becoming your best self, stretching past where you stop, and taking 100% responsibility, folks.

[00:16:06] That makes it more exciting.

[00:16:08] When you take 100% responsibility for your weight mastery journey, that you’re not a victim of anybody or your circumstances or anything, it gets exciting really fast because you have to hold yourself accountable.

[00:16:23] And you have to get really creative, and sometimes you have to have uncomfortable conversations with yourself or with other people.

[00:16:31] That’s not boring.

[00:16:32] That’s that’s kind of exciting, and it definitely stretches you.

[00:16:37] Hey, and, you know, let me remind you, it’s not weight loss’s fault.

[00:16:40] I think we think, “Oh, weight loss, so boring.”

[00:16:45] Weight loss is weight loss. You’re bringing the boring to it.

[00:16:49] You’re making it seem boring. You’re calling it boring.

[00:16:53] Weight loss is just innocent.

[00:16:55] It’s just the act of releasing weight, and all the other crapola that you put on it, you pile on it, that’s your stuff.

[00:17:05] So get 100% responsible, and start putting some of that crapola in the doggy doo bag, putting that in the trash, and starting to clean up and take responsibility and be powerful, and remember, you are a hero.

[00:17:21] I remember, maybe some of you remember with me Mary Tyler Moore Show.

[00:17:26] Maybe some of you younger folks saw it in syndication a couple times.

[00:17:29] And I don’t know if you remember the newscaster Ted Baxter.

[00:17:33] He was a silver head, silver-haired, smooth-talking, a bit of a dumb blonde, but very handsome, played by Ted Knight, I believe.

[00:17:42] Brilliant, brilliant comedian.

[00:17:45] And Mary Tyler Moore played this news producer in this, and she was sort of a female ahead of her time, a first producer of a TV station in Minneapolis.

[00:17:56] And there was an episode where, this was probably a few seasons in, I think it was seven seasons, eight seasons long.

[00:18:03] It was about halfway through the show.

[00:18:05] And she used to live in this one-room apartment, sort of a studio apartment, and she had a girlfriend upstairs, and she went through this depressed time where she just says like, “Life, my life is so boring.”

[00:18:17] And she said, “I just get up, and I eat breakfast, and I go to work, and I eat lunch, and I work some more, and I go home, and I eat dinner, and I go to bed. And then I get up, and I do it again, and again, and again.”

[00:18:40] And she’s just sitting there very mopely.

[00:18:44] Everybody else around her is kind of going, “Yeah, yeah, I get it.”

[00:18:50] But Ted, the anchorman, he’s like, “Well, Mary, I have the answer for you.”

[00:18:57] And everybody turns and looks at him with expectant eyes.

[00:19:02] And he says something, but it’s not even what he says, it’s the way he said it.

[00:19:07] It’s so simple and it’s so brilliant, but it’s such an idiot savant sort of thing to say.

[00:19:13] He’s like, “Well, Mary, you’ve just got to eat breakfast in the morning, and then you’ve got to go to work, and then you eat your lunch, and then you do more work, you know?” .

[00:19:29] So he’s like, he’s very animated as he’s very excitedly eating breakfast and excitedly going to work.

[00:19:36] And that is so true, that you could have this frame on your life like it’s boring, this frame on the way you eat like it’s boring.

[00:19:44] You can have this frame on your exercise and think it’s boring.

[00:19:50] Or you can start to get curious about it and go, “How can I bring some excitement to this?”

[00:19:57] Because the more we just put that word boring over everything, the more it suppresses it and brings it down in our brain.

[00:20:07] And let’s open up and let some light in and start to reframe how we see these things to ourself.

[00:20:15] If you’re bored with food, well, then get excited about some food.

[00:20:20] You know find some new recipes.

[00:20:22] Think of, go to the grocery store, give yourself a extra half hour to look for things outside of what you normally get.

[00:20:29] We tend to eat the same foods.

[00:20:30] And folks, can I just tell you, the bad things you eat, you eat about 10 of the bad meals, and you eat, when you’re eating healthy, 10 good meals.

[00:20:40] You know what I mean? So it’s not like when you’re eating bad that it’s so much more variety.

[00:20:45] In fact, it’s probably a lot less variety than when you’re eating healthily.

[00:20:49] So don’t tell me eating healthfully is boring.

[00:20:51] There’s nothing boring about it, but it’s our approach to it can become stagnant.

[00:20:56] But that’s up to you.

[00:20:57] You’ve got to bring some excitement.

[00:21:00] Same thing with exercise. Change it up.

[00:21:02] I can’t tell you how many times I’ve changed, learned new exercise.

[00:21:06] We have a woman in a group who, it brings all these wonderful different new exercises she finds, eccentric, qigong.

[00:21:14] And she’s always trying new things, and I think it’s so smart, because it keeps us in the game, it keeps us exciting.

[00:21:21] Even planning, I think the more you plan, I think we think of planning as boring, but planning really gives you a structure and a feeling of safety that sometimes allows you to experiment within it.

[00:21:34] And last but not least, create a mantra.

[00:21:38] Create a mantra that is a mantra that is going to make you excited about getting up and living your day. I today we had a meeting with my group, and when somebody had been just in this place and she created a mantra that she said, “I’m not my feelings, I’m not my emotions, I am the actions that I take.”

[00:22:01] I love that.

[00:22:02] And she just started to take simple actions that she was putting off or avoiding.

[00:22:09] And it made her feel so good.

[00:22:11] She said she had been so productive over the last few days.

[00:22:16] So create a new mantra for yourself.

[00:22:19] Okay, another cause of boredom, you’re releasing weight more slowly, and definitely that’s a cause of the lack of dopamine.

[00:22:26] I think one of the things that we do is really put all the attention on the scale.

[00:22:31] It’s all about the weight loss. We run to see how much weight we’ve lost or how our clothes fit us.

[00:22:37] And I wanna remind you that the long-term journey, I mean, I get it, it’s exciting in the beginning.

[00:22:45] It’s a transformational process.

[00:22:48] You’re seeing the scale go down.

[00:22:50] But we can become addicted to that, and we’re used to our dopamine hit, the scale’s down, so when it doesn’t go down, or it doesn’t go down for a few days or a week, it becomes really hard for us because that feeling, we kinda almost go through withdrawal because we’re not getting our fix on the scale, and then we become uninterested in the diet.

[00:23:10] Rather than really looking at this more as a holistic approach, it’s not just about weight, but it’s all about the bigger picture.

[00:23:17] You can negate the process by just looking at your weight.

[00:23:23] You wanna create… So here are some things you can do.

[00:23:26] You can create a sexier vision of who you are becoming because I think sometimes, like I said, we start to look at ourselves kind of as in the same old rut, “Oh, here I am struggling with my weight,” and, “Oh, gosh, this is boring,” and, “I’ve gotta be on a boring diet,” and, “I’m a loser.”

[00:23:46] Rather than- Being on a journey of who you are becoming.

[00:23:51] Really create that vision of you 20, 40, 60 down pounds off the scale, or ideal weight.

[00:23:57] Not when you reach your weight, but five years into it.

[00:24:00] Who is that you out in your life living fully?

[00:24:04] Because that you took no for did not take no for an answer, that you had resilience and tenacity, that you is out in their life being a leader in their life.

[00:24:14] Because when you release weight and keep it off, others watch you and they’re like, “Wow, I want some of what they have.”

[00:24:20] Now, they might not need to release weight, but they see that journey, and they’re like, “That person did something. I want that, too.”

[00:24:30] So, don’t underplay the powerful journey that you’re on and the example that you are setting for your kids, for your friends, for the people in your community.

[00:24:40] I have a saying, “Alone we diet, together we shift.”

[00:24:44] We can shift this world just by starting to truly shift ourselves.

[00:24:48] Create rewards that entice you along the way.

[00:24:52] I can’t tell you how motivating this is when you know you’re gonna get a massage when you reach that 20-pound goal, or when you’ve gotten used to when you’ve worked up to going five days to the gym, going away for a trip to the beach for the weekend, you know, or buying yourself a new exercise product or a new outfit to exercise.

[00:25:12] Give yourself rewards along the way. Treat yourself.

[00:25:16] Start living your life now and do stuff that scares you and that represents who you’re becoming.

[00:25:22] Again, going back to that sexy vision.

[00:25:24] Is that you dancing? Well, take some dance lessons.

[00:25:27] Is that you traveling? Take a foreign language class.

[00:25:31] Do the things you’re putting off. You know, “Oh, I’ll do that when I get thin.”

[00:25:35] Really? Well, start doing it now because putting all those things onto when you get thin, that’s gonna make getting thin really scary in your subconscious mind.

[00:25:45] So liven up your weight release journey by living your life now.

[00:25:52] Let’s do it, come on.

[00:25:53] What, what are you gonna do by the end of the year that you’ve never done before that will say to you, “I’m on an extraordinary journey of weight mastery”?

[00:26:04] Maybe it’s taking a cooking class, a healthy cooking class.

[00:26:07] Maybe it’s putting yourself on a dating app, a safe one, of course.

[00:26:12] But, you know, putting yourself out there, making a new friend, starting a walking group.

[00:26:18] Do something that represents to you that is, this is just not about running and getting on the scale, but that this is about who you’re becoming.

[00:26:28] Okay, another reason for being bored is you might not feel challenged.

[00:26:31] That happens a lot of times.

[00:26:35] So one of the things that you can do is to deepen your journey by deepening your skills.

[00:26:43] And what I mean by that is just like with me and gardening, there’s many surface things with weight loss that are the glamorous things, weighing yourself, the actual diet itself, certain things that you would think about when you go on a diet.

[00:26:59] But I’m talking about there’s really a skill set of weight mastery, and that whenever I’m feeling bored maintaining my weight, I always just kind of look at the skills that I use, at like for instance, exercise, and say, “Okay, well, how can I deepen my relationship with exercise?”

[00:27:20] Can I learn a new aspect of exercise? Can I lift a heavier weight?

[00:27:27] Can I challenge myself by running a little further?

[00:27:31] Can I do a more advanced version of what I’m doing?

[00:27:36] With regards to food, there’s often I’ll deepen my skills of … there’s so many things with food.

[00:27:43] Right now I’m really focusing on longevity, so I’ve learned more about what foods to eat that are aligned with longer lives.

[00:27:53] That’s a whole other episode.

[00:27:54] I’ll just share the book I’m reading with you.

[00:27:56] But yeah, so I’m kind of tweaking the way I’m eating right now.

[00:28:02] And that it always challenges me.

[00:28:04] I have been maintaining my weight now, a 40 pound weight release for 27 years.

[00:28:11] And in that time, I’ve radically reshifted and deepened my relationship with food.

[00:28:19] I’ve have a much better understanding of all foods and how they interact in my body.

[00:28:24] That’s from observing and being a scientist about that.

[00:28:29] I’m really more clear, like what supplements I need to eat or take to augment my health and maintain my blood sugar and to keep my muscles good.

[00:28:39] So that’s what I’m saying is there’s never…

[00:28:42] Don’t ever tell me, “Well, I’m bored with the food.”

[00:28:44] You’re being boring with the food, and I don’t mean this in a mean way.

[00:28:47] I mean to inspire you.

[00:28:49] Take that word boring away from your vocabulary.

[00:28:52] Look under the lid and start to l- get curious about how you can deepen your relationship with the aspects of the skills that you’re…

[00:29:02] ’cause I really look at weight mastery as developing skills not being good on something, right?

[00:29:07] Like not being a good on a diet.

[00:29:09] So what are the skills that you’re practicing, and how can you deepen them?

[00:29:13] And to add to that idea, I was just looking at my notes.

[00:29:16] In our Monthly Mastery group, we do a challenge every month.

[00:29:20] We challenge ourselves.

[00:29:21] We’ll challenge… What did we do? We did a measuring challenge to measure our food ’cause a lot of food packaging actually, ironically, is inaccurate.

[00:29:29] So we all discovered that when we did the challenge, but it’s this idea that we’re over practicing a skill that we may not be doing or that we don’t do very often just to sharpen that skill so that when you measure something and then you stop measuring, you have a much better idea of how much you’re putting in your body and your mouth because our eyeballs are not very accurate judges.

[00:29:52] And as we discovered, neither are the packages that foods are… the FDA can be or FDA has said that food companies can be up to 25% inaccurate in their calorie reporting and their nutritional reporting.

[00:30:05] So bear that in mind. But, we did that challenge, and we learned something from that challenge.

[00:30:11] We deepened our skill, and that’s what I mean by challenging yourself.

[00:30:15] There’s nothing boring about weight mastery journey.

[00:30:18] It’s a hero’s journey, and I know I’m saying that many, many times, but I want you to get it.

[00:30:23] Let’s see.

[00:30:24] Now, the other thing that you might be feeling boring about or that the feeling of boredom might be coming from is your inner rebel resistance.

[00:30:33] It’s a coverup for different feelings.

[00:30:36] So it might not really be boredom, but boredom seems a lot safer than the other feelings that might be going on.

[00:30:44] We have this inner rebel within us.

[00:30:46] I know we talk about the inner critic a lot.

[00:30:48] Well, you know, and our inner rebel is that part of us that wants to say, “It’s not fair. Being on a diet’s not fair. It’s boring. I wanna be free. I wanna be free to eat whatever I want. It’s not fair. It’s not fun. I don’t want to. This is su-” “Sucks. Oh, everybody gets to do it and I don’t,” right?

[00:31:09] Here’s what you wanna do, is you wanna acknowledge your inner rebel.

[00:31:13] You don’t wanna push it down because it just gets louder, haven’t you noticed?

[00:31:16] But you can acknowledge them.

[00:31:18] Say, “Oh, okay, you’re not having fun. I get it,” or, “You wanna be free. I understand. Oh, you don’t wanna do this. I really understand.”

[00:31:29] ‘Cause I think the more you acknowledge that part of you, the more it quiets down.

[00:31:35] It’s kind of like a child.

[00:31:36] When they feel acknowledged, they kind of calm down.

[00:31:40] So once you do that, I want you to take that child, that little inner rebel within you, and I want you to walk with them through to the end.

[00:31:49] Like, “Oh, I don’t want… You know, it’s not fair, it’s not fun. I wanna eat that chocolate chip cookie. It looks so good. Yum, yum, yum, yum.”

[00:31:58] Okay, inner rebel. Well, let’s think about that.

[00:32:01] Okay, we could eat that cookie, but then how’s it gonna taste? Oh, it’s gonna taste amazing. Okay, okay. Well, how’s it gonna feel after we eat the cookie?

[00:32:10] Well, maybe our blood sugar is gonna be spiked, maybe we’re gonna feel a little full, or feel a little off and balanced, and how are we gonna feel tomorrow?

[00:32:21] How are we gonna feel then?

[00:32:22] And when you walk through, like, a binge, or when you walk through overeating, when you walk through a food choice, or when you walk through a lot of these things with your inner rebel through to the end, and when I call it the end, past the fun part, what you’re really doing is retraining your mind to think the long game versus the short game.

[00:32:48] Our inner focus, our dopamine center is so focused on impulsive, short-term gratification.

[00:32:55] But when we start to acknowledge this part of ourselves and we start to pause, acknowledge the desire, and then walk that desire through to the end point, often that desire for that thing, the color sort of drains out of it, if you, so to speak.

[00:33:14] That rebellious part of us becomes a little more rational and willing to actually get curious about something that would really be fulfilling rather than what it thinks would be fulfilling.

[00:33:27] And focus how powerful what you’re doing is.

[00:33:30] Not shameful, but how powerful it is.

[00:33:34] You don’t have to do it, you can say to your inner rebel, you get to do it.

[00:33:39] You’re really dealing with a childlike part of yourself, so you can talk to that part.

[00:33:44] Say, “You’re really… You’re on this powerful journey. Isn’t that exciting?”

[00:33:48] So much of our journey of weight mastery is the way we communicate with ourselves.

[00:33:53] We can beat that rebel down, we can say shut up, we can try to put it in the closet, but it’s still gonna be there, still gonna be banging.

[00:34:02] It’s much better to be reasonable and rational with it, and to let it have a voice, but to also be the parent and to say, “I got that. Yeah, you really wanna do that. Well, let’s think that through. Is that really the best, and is that really aligned with who we are becoming?”

[00:34:19] And often, like I said, that rebel calms right down.

[00:34:25] So I hope you didn’t find this boring.
